Relyence Piece-Part FMEA

Relyence supports Piece-Part level FMEAs and FMECAs. For this guide, the term "Piece-Part FMEA" will be used as a general term for simplicity and readability. However, all the information in this section pertaining to Relyence Piece-Part FMEA is applicable to Piece-Part FMECAs as well. The topics in this section will describe how to enable the Piece-Part FMEA capability, use the Piece-Part FMEA interface, and how to use the FMD Library of Failure Mode data.

Piece-Part FMEAs and FMECAs

FMEAs (Failure Mode & Effects Analysis) or FMECAs (Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) can be done at a higher functional level and also at a low piece-part level. Functional FMEAs look at the failures of a system at the functional block level, such as a motherboard or power supply. Piece-Part FMEAs look at each individual component in a system, such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, and integrated circuits, defines all the potential failure modes of these components, and then evaluates the resulting effects of those failures on the system.

Given the depth and details involved in Piece-Part FMEAs, they require more time and effort. However, they have the advantages of comprehensiveness, more accurate estimates for probability of occurrence, and a well-defined quantitative assessment of criticality.

It is also advantageous to use both functional FMEAs and Piece-Part FMEAs together, as they work cohesively for complete analysis of your system. Functional FMEAs can be performed in early design when specifics are not known, but functional level assessments can be made. At the early design stage FMEAs can help to determine potential areas for mitigation of critical failures and establish the boundaries for the Piece-Part analyses performed later. Once the design has reached completion, a full Piece-Part FMEA ensures that you have a comprehensive assessment of all potential failure modes and effects.
